So we ran around AUB on Tuesday interviewing people and asking them what they thought defined what femininity and masculinity are, and the answers we got were actually really different. These two girls I interviewed couldn’t make up their minds about what defined masculinity in their eyes. They ended up agreeing that the guy had to be chivalrous, respectful, courageous, strong, and butchy. They also agreed that femininity could be described by the words sweet, cute, sensitive, well-groomed (Not Hairy), and respectful. the other three girls I interviewed all had similar opinions on what made a man masculine. They were all around the lines of him being tall, strong, smart, respectful, and nice. They had very differing ideas about what made girls feminine though. The differences were mostly physical aspects of a girls public appearance, so i’m not going to dive into details. Most of it was just that girls had to be skinny, sweet, petite, cute, emotional, and just be all around publicly acceptable. The guys I interviewed had differing views about what made a man masculine. Three of the five apparently agreed that a man’s beard definitely has something to do with it. Other than that they all seemed to agree that he had to be respectful, honest, strong (Both mentally and physically), with a manly-mentality, protective of those he loves, nice, chivalrous, and with a deepish voice. The answers i got for what defines femininity in a girl were varied. Some guys said that she has to have good attire, with nice hair, with a good posture and attitude, with a nice figure, and a nice nature and personality. Others said that she had to be humble, sweet, emotional, cute, caring, outgoing but slightly shy at the same time, and she had to know how to behave in public. I think that everyone I interviewed had valid reasons to believe what they said, even though i think that a couple of my participants took it as a joke. I believe that being a person someone can rely on, one who is compassionate, intelligent, chivalrous, caring, loyal, and strong, is what defines masculinity. What defines femininity in my opinion is a strong personality, cute, outgoing but withdrawn at the same time, humble, gentle, and… not dependent, but makes a man feel needed, type of woman. Femininity and Masculinity don’t really have much to do with your physical traits… And they can’t really be defined, as it varies from person to person. A person can be masculine one second, and all of a sudden be someone the complete opposite of masculine. Same thing with femininity. It all depends on the person.
